Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball Wins a Pair, Including GNAC Opener

NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 14, 2019 – For the second time in less than 24 hours, the Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team won a pair of matches. The Chargers began the day with their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest of the season and defeated the University of Saint Joseph 3-1. The team then swept UMaine Presque Isle 3-0.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 7-6 overall and 1-0 in GNAC play. The Chargers will hit the road on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. first serve at Middlebury.  

USJ fell to Colby-Sawyer, but defeated UMPI to push its record to 3-4. The Blue Jays will host Nichols on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

UMaine Presque Isle dropped both of its matches to fall to 0-6. The Owls return to the court next Saturday at Southern Maine.

COLBY-SAWYER 3, UNIV. of SAINT JOSEPH 2 – 25-10, 25-19, 23-25, 25-23

Colby-Sawyer senior Naarah Cox (Boston, Mass.) led all players with 12 kills. She added five blocks. Senior Rebecca Straubel (Altamont, N.Y.) tallied a double-double of 11 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore Anna Allen (Los Angeles, Calif.) also had a double-double of 36 assists and 13 digs. First-year Olivia Werner (Williston, Vt.) was third on the team with seven kills. Senior Morgan Flynn (Reading, Mass.) had a team best 16 digs.

The Blue Jays were led by first-year Shannon Carey (Bayport, N.Y.). She had nine kills, five blocks and five digs. Junior Amniah Tsonga (Plainville, Conn.) recorded eight kills and a match best 18 digs. Sophomore Nina Lestrud (Torrington, Conn.) finished with a match high five aces. First-year setter Nyah Young (Swansea, Mass.) finished with 27 assists.

UNIV of SAINT JOSEPH 3, UMAINE PRESQUE ISLE 0 – 25-12, 26-24, 25-23

The Blue Jays were led by Aminah Tsonga's 14 kills on .448 hitting. She added 13 digs and five aces. Shannon Carey added 13 kills, while Natalie Rabassa picked up a match best 22 digs. Nyah Young finished with 27 assists.

UMPI received eight kills from Taylor Miller. Maddi Thweatt and Ashlon Stroub contributed six kills apiece. Thweatt led the team with 16 digs. Madison Exferd registered 21 assists and seven digs.

COLBY-SAWYER 3, UMAINE PRESQUE ISLE 0 – 25-16, 25-11, 26-24

Naarah Cox led 10 Chargers who recorded at least one kill with six. Sophomore Maeve Powell (Orange, Mass.) was second on the team with four kills, while junior Nicole Matcheski (Sanbornton, N.H.) first-year Ava LaValle (Peabody, Mass.) and sophomore Sam Mohammed (Killingworth, Conn.) chipped in with three kills apiece. Junior Olivia Goodrich (Epping, N.H.) had nine assists and seven digs.

UMPI was led by Taylor Miller's four kills. Maddi Thweatt once again led the team with 15 digs.
