Colonels Fall to Falcons

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Curry College Women's Volleyball team was defeated by non-conference opponent Albertus Magnus 3-0 Wednesday evening on the road.

The Colonels fell to the Falcons of Albertus Magnus 3-0 (20-25, 20-25, 22-25).

With the losses, Curry moves forward with a record of 3-4.

The first set saw a consistent battle between the two sides, the hosting Falcons taking an early 6-3 lead before Morgan Muscato (Plymouth, Mass.) Lauryn Gedeon (Holbrook, Mass.) and Lauren Guzman (Cranston, R.I.) marked kills along with a Lexie Jenkins (Burns, Wyo.) service ace to take a 7-6 lead in the first set. Albertus Magnus managed to charge forth on an 8-1 scoring run to take a substantial lead over the Colonels. A series of errors by the hosts propelled the Colonels to just a one-point deficit with the score 18-19. A handful of errors by Curry late in the first set would grant the hosts a one-set lead.

Albertus Magnus began the second set on a 14-7 scoring run to take an early lead. The hosts held the seven-point lead until Curry's Gedeon and Guaman combined for a trio of kills paired with errors on the hosts to bring the score to 23-20 in favor of Albertus. A service ace for the Falcons closed the set with Albertus Magnus now leading 2-0.

The final set saw a similar battle between the two non-conference sides. At 6-6, the Colonels struck, three kills from freshman Sonja Matheson (Voluntown, Conn.) and a service ace and kill from Lauren Guzman pushed Curry to a 12-8 lead over the hosts. The two sides would tie again in the third set at 15-15 before Albertus Magnus would take a 20-16 lead over the visitors. Two service aces from Curry's Morgan Muscato paired with a kill from Sonja Matheson and Jess Sullivan (Meredith, N.H.) granted the Colonels a one-point lead, 21-22. The hosting Albertus Magnus Falcons would take the contest by a final score of 25-22 following a successful block by their own Diana Kalman and errors by the Colonels. 

Curry College was led by Sonja Matheson (5 kills, 8 digs), Lexie Jenkins (3 service aces, 14 digs), Leah Oscar-Pheonix (9 assists), and Lauren Guzman (5 kills). 

The Colonels will be back on the hardwood Friday as they hit the road to face Norwich University at 5 PM.
