Auggies finish 4-0 at Augsburg Invite

BOXSCORE 1 | BOXSCORE 2 MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The Augsburg University volleyball team finished its own Augsburg Invitational undefeated on Saturday, claiming two three-set sweeps of UMass-Boston and Dubuque (Iowa). Jaelin Rios (SR, Champlin, Minn./Totino Grace HS) and Kayla Gjerde (SO, Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS) were named to the All-Tournament Team. 

THE BASICS - AUGSBURG VS. UMASS-BOSTON
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg def. UMass-Boston 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-8)
LOCATION: Si Melby Hall, Minneapolis, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 6-1, UMass-Boston 1-5

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST UMASS-BOSTON
• The Auggies came out strong and earned a convincing three-set victory against the Beacons, holding the Beacons to only 30 total points in the match and out-hitting them .333 to -.034.
Izzy Barr (SO, River Falls, Wis./River Falls HS) collected an impressive seven aces on 22 serves, while adding 21 assists and four digs. 
• Corrina Evans (JR, Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS) paced the Augsburg offense with 13 kills, hitting at a .500 clip. Maddie Nierengarten (JR, Foley, Minn./Princeton HS) and Gjerde added seven kills each, while Nierengarten earned nine digs and two service aces, and Gjerde had four digs, two assists and two block assists. 
• Rios had a match-high 12 digs, also adding two assists and a service ace.
• Jade Fullerton (SO, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) and Jade Boysen (SO, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) presented another solid performance at the net with four blocks each. Fullerton added three assists and one solo block, and Boysen had four block assists. 

FOR THE FOES (UMASS-BOSTON)
• Emilia Czapiewska had six kills, two block assists and a service ace for the Beacons. 
• Tyla Parker earned nine digs while Carsen Komminsk had a team-best seven assists.

FINAL SCORE: Augsburg def. Dubuque (Iowa) 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-15)

RECORDS: Augsburg 6-1, Dubuque (Iowa) 5-2 

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST DUBUQUE 
• Augsburg once again started the match firing on all cylinders and strung together an impressive three-set victory over the Spartans. The Auggies hit .234, while holding the Spartans to a -.033 effort. Additionally, Augsburg out-blocked Dubuque by a 6-3 margin, had a 53-37 dig advantage and had eight service aces to the Spartans' two. 
• Gjerde led the Auggie offense, earning a match-high 12 kills -- the only player with double-digit kills. Gjerde also had 11 digs, matching the 11-dig effort of Nierengarten.  
• Evans made her presence known in the Augsburg victory, claiming six kills and a match-high four blocks (two solo). Megan Quam (SR, Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) added six kills of her own and two blocks (one solo). 
• Defensive specialist Rios earned her third match-best dig effort of the tournament with 12 digs. 
• Lexie Lang (SO, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) and Barr had 19 and 11 assists, respectively. Barr added three service aces in eight serve attempts. 

FOR THE FOES (DUBUQUE)
• Kara Wright and Rylee Andresen had five kills each for the Spartans. 
• Grace Strawser claimed 11 digs, while Kate Messino earned 11 assists. 
UP NEXT
• Augsburg returns to action Thursday (9/12) at 7 p.m. for a nonconference match at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.
