Women's Volleyball Falls to Southern Maine, 3-0

NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 18, 2017 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's volleyball team fell to the University of Southern Maine, 3-0, in non-conference action Wednesday evening. Southern Maine won by scores of 25-10, 27-25 and 25-17.

The Huskies improve to 17-6 and will resume Little East Conference (LEC) play on Saturday at UMass Dartmouth. Colby-Sawyer falls to 11-16 and will hit the road on Saturday to conclude North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at Husson against the Eagles and Maine Maritime.

Southern Maine was led by senior Jess Williamson (Goffstown, N.H.). She recorded a double-double of match-highs in kills with 15 and digs with 17. Sophomore Kylee Austin (Saco, Maine) added nine kills on .533 hitting and a pair of blocks. Junior setter Nicole Schmitz (St. Paul, Minn.) registered 36 assists, nine digs and two blocks. Senior Mo Raymond (Sanbornton, N.H.) contributed eight kills and 14 assists.  

Colby-Sawyer sophomore Naarah Cox (Boston, Mass.) led the Chargers with nine kills. Junior Courtney Murray (Quincy, Mass.) added seven kills. Senior Alli Lahiff (Haverhill, Mass.) collected four kills and a team best two blocks. Sophomore setter Olivia Goodrich (Epping, N.H.) had a double-double of 23 assists and 11 digs, while sophomore Morgan Flynn (Reading, Mass.) posted a team best 14 digs.  

The Huskies scored the first seven points of the match to force an early Colby-Sawyer timeout. Southern Maine hit .303 in the first frame and received five kills from Williamson to take the 25-10 victory.

The second set saw Colby-Sawyer take an early 6-3 lead. The Chargers held the advantage until Southern Maine tied the score at 20-20 off a Colby-Sawyer miscue. The visitors then went in front by a point before Rebecca Straubel (Altamont, N.Y.) tied the set at 21-21 with a kill. Cox then added a kill to regain the lead for the Chargers. The Huskies battled back and had set point, but committed a service error to extend the frame with the score tied at 24-24. The set would be tied again at 25-25 when Southern Maine rattled off two points to win 27-25.

The third set featured 10 ties and five lead changes, which occurred in the first half of the set. With the score tied at 12-12, Southern Maine used a 6-3 run, capped by a Schmitz kill, to take an 18-15 lead and never looked back. The Huskies finished the set with a 7-2 run to win 25-17 and take the match 3-0.
