Women's Volleyball Advances to NAC Semifinals

NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 28, 2017 – The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team defeated Green Mountain, 3-0, in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers won by scores of 25-3, 25-12 and 25-19.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 13-18 and will play second seed Husson in the NAC semifinals on Friday, November 3. The 13 wins is the most for the Chargers since 2014. Colby-Sawyer and Husson split a pair of matches earlier this season with each side winning 3-1 on their home court. Green Mountain ends its season at 5-15.  

Colby-Sawyer sophomore Naarah Cox (Boston, Mass.) paced the Chargers with 11 kills on .429 hitting. Sophomore Morgan Flynn (Reading, Mass.) had a team best 11 digs, while freshman Bre Sheehan (Stillwater, N.Y.) added five digs. Sophomore setter Olivia Goodrich (Epping, N.H.) filled the stat sheet with 22 assists, nine digs, five aces and five kills on five attempts. Senior Alli Lahiff (Haverhill, Mass.) finished with seven kills and three assists.

Green Mountain was led by freshman Estela Felix Almeida (South Gate, Calif.). She posted five kills, eight digs and a block. Freshman Madison Wheeler (Lyndeborough, N.H.) contributed three kills and eight digs. Freshman Caroline Gay (West Palm Beach, Fla.) tallied six assists, nine digs and a pair of aces.

The Chargers opened the match on a 13-0 run capped by a Cox kill. Colby-Sawyer continued with an efficient offensive attach to take the first set25-3 behind .524 hitting. Cox had six kills in the frame.

Colby-Sawyer raced out to an 11-2 run in the second set to force a Green Mountain timeout. The home team then took a 20-6 lead when an Almeida kill, a pair of Nancy Olmedo-Chavez (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) aces and a Colby-Sawyer error made the score 20-10. The Chargers then scored five of the next seven points to close the set 25-12.

The third set featured three ties and a pair of lead changes. Colby-Sawyer took an early lead once again, but Green Mountain stormed back to tie the set at 11-11. The Eagles then received kills from Almeida and Kali Bushey (Rouses Point, N.Y.) to take a two-point lead. The visitors then held a four-point advantage at 16-12 after a Bushey ace. Colby-Sawyer rallied to tie the frame at 17-17 on a Lahiff kill and then closed the set and the match with an 8-2 run capped by another Lahiff kill.
