Marcellus Digs Milestone in 3-0 Setback at RIC 

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Suffolk volleyball had a memorable night despite a straight set loss to Rhode Island College as Dakhensey Marcellus became the second-ever Ram in program history to hit the 1,000-dig marker Tuesday night at the Mullar Center.

SET ONE RECAP (25-22, RIC)

  • Both teams exchanged points over the opening action. 
  • The Anchormen gained a 5-1 lead before the Rams came back to even the score, 8-8. 
  • The hosts went on a 6-0 run to take the lead, 14-8. 
  • The lead did not last long as Suffolk went on its own run to come within one point, 14-13. 
  • RIC stood tall on the defense for the rest of the of the set and eventually closed the Rams out to win a trio of points, 25-22.  

SET TWO RECAP (25-22, RIC)

  • The lead shifted sides every other point as the largest edge was five, 9-4, by RIC. 
  • The Anchormen proved to be too much for the Rams as the captured the second stanza by an identical first frame margin, 25-22.  

SET THREE RECAP (25-17, RIC)

  • Back-and-forth, see-saw action occurred as the scored leveled six times. 
  • Following a Suffolk timeout, the Anchormen were able to build momentum and put the blue-and-gold in a 22-15 hole. 
  • The Rams used their second break of the set to slow down RIC, but it was ineffective as the hosts came out of the huddle and outscored the visitors, 3-1, to secure the 3-0 victory.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Marcellus finished the night with 12 digs, the exact number she needed to eclipse the 1,000-dig record. She added five assists and one ace to her stat line. 
  • Kayla Barbera contributed on both sides of the net with 10 digs, eight kills and one block. 
  • Hannah Fabiano anchored the attack with 10 kills to go along with seven digs, one ace and one block. 
  • Sarah Mullahy notched seven kills, two bocks, one ace and one dig. 
  • Harmony Johnson registered 25 handouts, seven digs, two aces and two kills.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Marcellus is the second-ever Ram to record 1,000 digs in their career she is the first since Colbey Kennedy did so in 2013. 
  • Marcellus is the fast Ram to 1,000 digs, reaching the feat in 80 matches and in her junior senior.

Suffolk concludes its regular-season slate with a GNAC tri-match at the Ridgeway Building as Simmons and Saint Joseph's (Maine) are set to stop by Saturday, Nov. 2. The Rams open the day against the Sharks at 11 a.m., before wrapping up the action at 3 p.m. with the Monks.
