NEWVA Releases Third Regional Poll of 2016 - New England Women's Volleyball Association

BEVERLY, Mass. - October 12, 2016 - The top five teams from last week's NEWVA Regional Poll stay the same including Johnson & Wales (R.I.) who remains in the top spot in this week's NEWVA Regional Poll after a 3-0 week. The only change comes with UMass Boston leaping over MIT into the No. 3 position after impressively knocking off three teams without dropping a set.

NEWVA Regional Poll #3

1. Johnson & Wales (R.I.) (20-0 overall, 20-0 in-region), 115 points, five first place votes

Johnson & Wales (R.I.) continued to roll with three shutout victories over Anna Maria last Tuesday on the road and a pair of wins over UMass Dartmouth and Western New England in a tri-match. This week's opposition includes a midweek showdown with NAC foe Colby-Sawyer at home Wednesday evening before three consecutive GNAC matches away from Providence against Emmanuel (Mass.), Mount Ida, and Saint Joseph's (Maine).

2. Tufts (15-1 overall, 15-1 in-region), 113 points, two first place votes

Tufts bested Rivier in straight sets then scored important NESCAC wins on the road over Hamilton (3-1) and NEWVA No. 6 Middlebury (3-2) to remain in the No. 2 position in this week's poll. This week, the Jumbos have already beaten NEWVA No. 13 Babson in straight sets at home. They continue a four-match homestand with Bates on Friday before hosting Colby and Gordon on Saturday.

3. UMass Boston (17-3 overall, 14-2 in-region), 100 points

UMass Boston jumps into the No. 3 slot in this week's NEWVA Regional Poll after winning in straights over UMass Dartmouth, Colby-Sawyer, and Coast Guard. This week, the Beacons hosted NEWVA No. 12 Roger Williams and swept the Hawks 3-0 for their fourth straight win. One lone road tilt at LEC rival Keene St. on Thursday evening wraps up this week's schedule.

4. MIT (18-3 overall, 15-1 in-region), 99 points, one first place vote

Despite going 2-0 last week, beating NEWVA No. 15 Wellesley and Colby-Sawyer in straight sets, MIT falls one spot to No. 4 in this week's NEWVA Regional Poll. The Engineers have four matches this week and have already scored a 3-1 victory over Mount Ida on Tuesday. At this weekend's MIT Quad Tournament, MIT will host SUNY Oneonta, Mount Saint Vincent, and Swarthmore to kick off a seven-match homestand.

5. Springfield (17-3 overall, 13-1 in-region), 91 points

Springfield played five matches last week, four of which came at their own Tom Hay Invitational, and went undefeated dropping only a single set to NEWVA No. 7 Amherst. The week started with a 3-0 win over NEWVA No. 11 Clark before triumphs over Westfield St., Endicott, Bard, and Amherst. The Pride beat Mount Holyoke on Tuesday 3-0 and have four matches on the docket this weekend at the Stevens Invitational against Haverford, the host Ducks, Fairleigh Dickinson, and Montclair St.
