Wesleyan Takes Over Top Spot in NEWVA Poll No. 2

BEVERLY, Mass. - September 17, 2019 - For the first time since the opening poll of 2017, there is a new team in sole possession of first place overall in the NEWVA Coaches Poll. This week, the Cardinals of Wesleyan (Conn.), the No. 16 ranked in the most recent AVCA DIII Coaches Poll, have edged out the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales (R.I.) for the regional title, receiving eight of the 10 first place votes.

The third NEWVA regional poll will be released on Tuesday, September 24.

The No. 16 team in the nation in the most recent AVCA DIII Coaches Poll, the Cardinals remained perfect this week, improving their record to 6-0 with sweeps of Vassar, Western Conn. St., and Morrisville St.

2. No. 5 (AVCA) Johnson & Wales (R.I.) (8-1, 0-0 GNAC) | 141 points | 2 first place votes

The No. 5 team in the most recent AVCA DIII Coaches Poll, the Wildcats went 3-0 on the week with a pair of 3-1 wins over Springfield and Stevens and a sweep of Roger Williams.

3. Babson (7-0, 0-0 NEWMAC) | 126 points 

The No. 20 ranked team in the country, the Babson Beavers went 3-0 on the week, sweeping SUNY Geneseo and Bowdoin before finishing with a 3-1 win over RIT to win the MIT Invitational.

4. Tufts (7-0, 0-0 NESCAC) | 122 points

The Jumbos are currently 7-0 on the season which includes a sweep of Coast Guard, and a pair of 3-1 wins over Endicott and Wellesley.

5. Wellesley (5-3, 0-0 NESCAC) | 98 points

The Blue, making their first appearance in the top five in 2019, went 2-2 last week, defeating UMass Dartmouth 3-0 and Endicott 3-2, while falling to Bowdoin 3-2 and Tufts 3-1.
