2022 NEWVA Awards Announced

NEWVA All-New England

BEVERLY, Mass. - November 8, 2022 - The New England Women's Volleyball Coaches Association (NEWVA) has released its 2022 NEWVA Annual Awards honoring the region's Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and the All-New England Teams. Earning Co-Player of the Year honors were Consecreta Rozario of MIT, and Amanda Gilbert of Endicott, while Abby Hunt of Smith was named NEWVA Rookie of the Year.

The NEWVA Annual Award recipients are nominated by and voted on by the organization's member head coaches. The coaches represent the seven competing conferences in NCAA Division III including the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), Little East Conference (LEC), Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC), North Atlantic Conference (NAC), New England Collegiate Conference (NECC), New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), and New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC).

NEWVA Co-Players of the Year

Consecreta Rozario, Jr., MB from Cary, N.C.

In her junior season for the Engineers, Consecreta has led MIT to back-to-back NEWMAC titles and the overall No. 1 seed in their region, and has earned 2022 NEWVA Co-Player of the Year distinction. Currently ranked 20th in the most recent AVCA DIII Coaches Poll, the Engineers are 24-5 heading into NCAA Tournament play on Thursday at the Tufts Regional. 

The Cary, N.C. native is currently ranked fourth in the country with her .426 hitting percentage, having recorded 171 kills and just 32 errors on 326 attempts in her 70 sets played. Rozario is averaging 2.34 kills/set, .60 blocks/set and 2.68 points/set on the season overall. In NEWMAC play, the junior hit .468 after finishing with 60 kills and just eight errors on 111 attempts.  Rozario was recently named the NEWMAC Athlete of the Year and was named to the First Team All-NEWMAC. Through two seasons at MIT, the middle has recorded 279 kills and hit for a .443 average in 46 matches played. Rozario has also been named to the NEWVA All-New England First Team.

 

 


Amanda Gilbert, Gr., OH from West Falmouth, Mass.

Gilbert, competing in her fourth year of intercollegiate play, has led Endicott to back-to-back-to-back CCC titles and NCAA DIII Tournament appearances, and has earned 2022 NEWVA Co-Player of the Year honors. The graduate student has led the Gulls to a 22-8 record overall as they ready for NCAA Tournament play on Thursday at the Wesleyan Regional.

The West Falmouth, Mass. native is currently ranked 51st in the country in both total kills (369) and kills per set (3.69). The outside has set career-highs in kills (369), attempts (940), aces (43), aces/set (.43), digs (289), digs/set (2.89), points (430.5) and points/set (4.3), while she is also currently tied for her career-high mark with a .281 hitting percentage (369-105-940). Against CCC competition, Gilbert hit at a .322 clip, and led the CCC in kills/set (3.87) and points/set (4.6). The graduate student also eclipsed the 1,000 career-kill plateau and currently stands at 1,111 heading into NCAA DIII Tournament play on Thursday. Gilbert has also been named to the NEWVA All-New England First Team.

 

 


NEWVA Rookie of the Year

Following an impressive opening campaign in which she led Smith with her 250 kills, first year Abby Hunt has been named the 2022 NEWVA Rookie of the Year. Hunt was a catalyst for the Pioneers who finished the season with an overall record of 21-11, which included a 5-5 record in NEWMAC play. Smith advanced to the NEWMAC semifinals where they fell to eventual champion MIT 3-1.

The first year lead the Pioneers in nearly every offensive category, including kills (250), kills/set (2.6) attempts (645), points (276.5) and points/set (2.9). Hunt also led the team against NEWMAC foes, finishing with 81 kills in 10 conference matches, averaging 2.31 kills/set and 2.5 points/set in NEWMAC play.

On the season, Hunt finished with double-digit kill efforts on 13 different occaisions, posting a season-best 21 kill effort in the team's five set match against Clark on September 24. 

Hunt has also been named to the NEWVA All-New England First Team.
