CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland finished with a 2-2 record at its season-opening 35th Annual Red Dragon Classic after losing to Baldwin Wallace in four sets and beating Canton in three sets during the second day of competition.
Baldwin Wallace was one of three schools, along with St. Lawrence and Stockton, to finish 4-0 during the weekend. The Yellow Jackets were declared tournament champion based on a tiebreaker system. BW and St. Lawrence each played 14 sets, compared to Stockton's 17 sets, and BW allowed fewer total points than St. Lawrence to win the second tiebreaker.
Cortland lost the opening set to BW, 25-19, but won the second set, 25-21. The guests captured the third set, 25-20, and edged the Red Dragons in the fourth, 25-23, to win the match.
Hannah Southcott (Princeton, WV) led Cortland with 15 kills and 19 digs and
Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) had 11 kills and three blocks.
Maya Owens (Nyack) and
Taylor Konzen (Bohemia/Connetquot) each totaled seven kills, with Konzen adding 17 digs.
Carly Haegele (Commack) finished with 18 digs and
Bridgette Moran (Massapequa Park/St. John the Baptist) led the team with five blocks.
Cortland wrapped the tournament with a 25-14, 25-11, 25-14 sweep of Canton behind 10 kills from Owens and seven kills and 11 digs by Konzen. Moore, Southcott and
Nicole Van Pelt (Montgomery/Valley Central) chipped in with five kills each.
Moore was named to the all-tournament team. In four matches she was second on the Red Dragons with 36 kills, 11 blocks and 42.5 total points scored.
Cortland will compete at the University of Rochester Invitational next weekend. The Red Dragons will face Medaille and Rochester Friday and Utica and Nazareth Saturday.
