How It Happened

The first game did not start off well for the Buccaneers as they found themselves down 6-0 to start the match and eventually down 10-1. With the Lasers up by nine the Bucs grabbed some momentum after a timeout. Following the break, Maritime went on an 11-2 run to take a 13-12 lead midway through the first game. Their lead grew to four points, 18-14, as they kept their run going as it was now 16-4. After a Maritime service error however, Lasell retook control of the game tying the set at 18-18 and then taking a lead they would not relinquish. After a 7-0 run the Lasers were up three, 21-18. Though the Bucs pulled back within one late, 23-22, the Lasers benefited from two Maritime errors to take the first set 25-23.

Set two was nearly an identical copy of the first set, especially at the start. Lasell went up 9-0 to begin the game and that lead stretched to 10, 12-2, at one point. With the score 12-2, Maritime began shrinking the deficit by scoring seven of the next nine points to get within five. Rallies went back and forth with the teams trading points. Maritime was still on the plus end of the spectrum closing the gap even more, eventually to three points, 22-19. Attempting to close the deficit more, the Bucs committed multiple errors, allowing the Lasers to back up by five, 24-19. With a point need to win, the Lasers gave up two points on an error and a Sheehan kill but it wouldn't be enough for the Bucs as the Lasers scored the 25th point winning the set, 25-21.

Set three began much better for the Bucs as they stayed within three points of Lasell until the score went to 10-7 in favor of the road Lasers. From there, Lasell went on to score nine of the next ten points taking a 19-8 lead. Over the next 14 points, Maritime outscored Lasell 8-6 but the Lasers only need those six points to put away the game, 25-16, and the subsequently the match, 3-0.
