Bowdoin Volleyball NCAA TOURNAMENT PREVIEW

The Bowdoin College volleyball team heads to Tufts University for the second straight week, this time for an NCAA Division III Tournament regional. The Polar Bears will open on Friday night at 5:30 p.m. in a first round match against Endicott College.

SEASON RECAP

Coming off one of the most successful seasons in program history, the Polar Bears scuffled to a 4-6 start before coming up against nationally-ranked Johnson & Wales on Saturday, September 28. The Polar Bears picked up a 3-1 win that afternoon and didn't lose again until last Sunday's NESCAC Championship match, rolling off a 14-1 record over their last 15 games

Bowdoin (18-7) earned an at-large bid thanks to their outstanding strength of schedule and strong second half of the season. The Polar Bears will be making their third NCAA Tournament appearance in five years under head coach Erin Cady. Bowdoin has advanced to the "Sweet Sixteen" of the NCAA Tournament on four occasions and to the "Elite Eight" once – in 2015. This will be the program's sixth-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.

This week, senior Caroline Flaharty and sophomore Cori Gray were recognized in All-NESCAC awards handed out by the conference.

FIRST ROUND MATCH-UP

The Polar Bears drew a familiar foe in the opening round as they will play Endicott College (23-7), the automatic qualifier out of the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Gulls are also on a hot streak, having won eight matches entering the NCAA Tournament. In fact, Endicott's last loss was a 3-0 setback to Bowdoin on October 18 in Morrell Gymnasium.

Bowdoin leads the all-time series between the teams, 11-6, but have won seven straight overall against the Gulls. Endicott has not defeated the Polar Bears since the 2010 season.

This season Bowdoin has faced five of the other teams in the regional, going 3-3. The Polar Bears defeated Johnson & Wales, Endicott and Maine Maritime during the regular season and lost to Babson and Tufts (2).

REGIONAL OVERVIEW

The winner of Friday's game will advance to the second round against the winner of the Tufts-Eastern Nazarene on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. Sunday's regional final is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens, on sale one hour prior to the start of the first match each day.
