Volleyball Falls on the Road at WCSU Thursday Night

DANBURY, Conn - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) volleyball team dropped its penultimate non-conference match on the road at intrastate foe Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) Thursday night inside Feldman Arena in Danbury, Conn. With the result, the Blue Jays fall to 3-16 overall on the year while the Wolves move to 12-5.

KEY MOMENTS

  • The Wolves started the match strong, jumping out to a 9-0 edge before senior outside hitter Shannon Carey (Bayport, N.Y.) put an end to the run with a kill.
  • WCSU continued to control the opening set, establishing an 18-3 lead, forcing USJ to call a timeout.
  • The Blue Jays would try and mount a late comeback, as freshman outside hitter Shaye Harris (Prospect, Conn.) and Carey would notch kills, but the Wolves held on to take the opening set, 25-14.
  • WCSU gained another early lead in the second set, establishing a 7-1 edge and forcing USJ to call a timeout.
  • The Blue Jays would keep the gap at six, 12-6, after two kills from Carey, but the Wolves would break open a nine-point lead, 18-9.
  • USJ again tried to fight back late, but the Wolves held on, winning the second set, 25-14, to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • WCSU took another big lead to start the third set, jumping out to a 9-3 edge.
  • USJ would cut the gap to four, 10-6, after a kill from senior middle blocker Victoria Adler (Berlin, Conn.), but WCSU responded with a 5-1 stretch to take a 15-7 edge and force a Blue Jays timeout.
  • The Wolves gained the momentum out of the break, ending the set on a 10-1 run to win the set, 25-8, and the match, 3-0.

The Blue Jays return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Saturday, October 14, hosting a tri-match against conference newcomer and intrastate opponent Mitchell College and Colby-Sawyer College. First serve against the Mariners inside James A. Calhoun Gymnasium in West Hartford, Conn., is set for 11:00 a.m.
