PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team closed out the Best Western Plus-Ground Round Cardinal Classic with a pair of setbacks on Saturday at Memorial Hall, falling to Colby-Sawyer College, 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-18), before dropping a 3-1 (31-29, 18-25, 29-27, 25-13) decision to Plymouth State University.
As a result of her play over the weekend, junior outside hitter
Rachel Mennonna (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) was named to the All-Tournament Team. She was joined by junior outside hitter/middle blocker Francie Shaffer and sophomore setter Alexa Price of Plymouth State, senior outside hitter Megan Ryder from The Sage Colleges, senior libero Morgan Flynn from Colby-Sawyer and sophomore setter Kayley Ericson from Hartwick College.
Plymouth State captured the tournament's team championship by virtue of being the only unbeaten team on the weekend.
Plattsburgh State drops to 1-3 overall with the losses and next competes at the Husson Eagles Classic from Friday-Saturday, Sept. 6-7. The Cardinals open up the event against host Husson University on Friday at 6 p.m. Colby-Sawyer and Plymouth State rise to 3-1 and 4-0, respectively.
Colby-Sawyer 3, Plattsburgh State 1 (19-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-18)
While both teams were relatively even on the stat sheet, Colby-Sawyer used a strong performance at the service line to come away with the win. The Chargers floored 13 aces during the four-set match and also held the upper hand in hitting percentage (.166-to-.156), kills (54-41) and digs (79-74). Plattsburgh State, meanwhile, finished with a 9-3 cushion in blocks.

Kaitlyn Bjelko (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) each tallied eight kills to lead the Cardinal attack, with Bjelko's total serving as a career-high. Senior setter/opposite

Allyssa Rock (West Chazy, N.Y./Beekmantown) distributed 17 and 15 assists, respectively, while junior middle blocker
Michelle Simmons (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) matched a career-high in total blocks with nine (three solo, six assist). Mennonna defended a career-high 19 digs, while Hyde tallied 18. Junior libero
Abby Bone (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) and Rock also had double-digit dig figures with 12 and 10, respectively.
For Colby-Sawyer, senior middle blocker Naarah Cox (16 kills), senior outside hitter Rebecca Straubel (13 kills) and sophomore outside hitter Sam Mohammed (11 kills) led the offense, while Straubel and Mohammed each completed the double-double with 18 and 16 digs, respectively. Sophomore setter Anna Allen dished out 41 assists, while Cox posted two solo blocks.
Plymouth State 3, Plattsburgh State 1 (31-29, 18-25, 29-27, 25-13)
Plymouth State edged Plattsburgh State by two points in the first and third sets, and after the Panthers capped off their 29-27 win in the third set thanks to a kill by senior outside hitter Alexis Bowers, they cruised to a match-clinching victory in the fourth.
The Panthers hit .174 for the match, including a .444 hitting percentage (10-2-18) in the fourth set. Plattsburgh State held a 7-4 advantage in service aces, while Plymouth State owned the upper hand in digs (63-58) and blocks (9-8).
Mennonna registered a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs, while Rock dished out 18 assists and added 13 digs. Simmons floored three aces and had six total blocks (one solo, five assist).
For Plymouth State, Shaffer, Bowers and junior middle blocker/right side Carabeth Norklun tallied 15, 13 and 13 kills, respectively. Price handed out 43 assists, while senior libero Alisha Flanagan defended 15 digs. Senior right side Allie Rogers paced the Panthers at the net with five total blocks (one solo, four assist).
