NEWVA Regional Poll #4 - Week Ending October 4, 2015

BEVERLY, Mass. - The NEWVA Regional Poll saw a shake up in the top five in this week's release while New England's top dog, MIT, remained at the #1 slot while rising to a national AVCA ranking.

1. MIT (17-1 overall, 13-0 in-region), 120 points, eight first place votes

MIT's three wins over NEWVA #6 Clark (Mass.), Wheaton (Mass.), and Framingham St. all came in four sets and were enough to lift the Engineers to the #25 spot in this week's AVCA national rankings. The Engineers are slated to face Wellesley and Emmanuel this week.

2. Amherst (11-1 overall, 11-1 in-region), 110 points

Amherst took down NESCAC foes Colby and Bates in straight sets last week and secured their #2 ranking in the NEWVA poll. The Lord Jeffs take a four-match win-streak into their Wednesday contest at Westfield St. before another conference weekend with Middlebury and Hamilton.

3. Springfield (17-2 overall, 12-2 in-region), 99 points

Springfield opened up their 5-0 week with a straight-set victory over NEWMAC opponent Wheaton (Mass.) before heading down to New Jersey where the Pride swept through their Kean Invitational competition for four wins. Trine, Kean, Olivet, and Frostburg State all went down as Springfield ran their recent win-streak to eight. Springfield takes on Clark, Eastern Con. St., Westfield St., and Keene St. this week.

4. Williams (10-5 overall, 5-1 in-region), 98 points

Williams ended a three-match losing skid by defeating Union (N.Y.), Bates, and Colby in straight sets. Due to Springfield's jump to #3 in the NEWVA Regional Poll, the Ephs fall to fourth. They will look to continue to recent strong play this week against New Paltz St., Hamilton, and Middlebury, all on the road.

5. Tufts (9-4 overall, 8-2 in-region), 88 points

Tufts started off their week with a 3-1 triumph over UMass Boston but in their Saturday tri-match against Bowdoin and Keene St., the Polar Bears upset the Jumbos in four. Tufts took down Keene St. in straight sets but the former third-ranked Jumbos fell two spots in the fourth NEWVA Regional Poll.
