NEWVA Regional Poll #5 - Week Ending October 11, 2015

BEVERLY, Mass. - The NEWMAC owns the top two spots in the fifth NEWVA Regional Poll as MIT leads the pack with six first place votes followed by Springfield. The NESCAC controls six of the following seven places on the top-15 New England ranking.

1. MIT (19-1 overall, 15-0 in-region), 90 points, six first place votes

The 25th-ranked MIT Engineers kept rolling along with their 13th and 14th consecutive victories last week. MIT beat NEWMAC opponent Wellesley in straight sets at home and Emmanuel in four sets on the road to maintain their top billing in the NEWVA. The Engineers face Mount Ida on Tuesday night before hosting St. Lawrence, Western New Eng., and SUNY New Paltz in their MIT Quad Tournament.

2. Springfield (17-2 overall, 16-2 in-region), 81 points

With four wins last week, Springfield has taken over the #2 spot in the NEWVA poll and are currently 8-0 in the month of October which goes towards a 12-match win streak. Springfield's defeats last week include NEWVA #7  and NEWMAC rival Clark, Eastern Conn. St., Westfield St., and Keene St. The Pride take a break with only one match this week, at NEWMAC foe Mount Holyoke on Tuesday.

3. Amherst (13-2 overall, 13-2 in-region), 76 points

Amherst goes 2-1 on the week and drops down to the #3 position in the NEWVA Regional Poll. Their loss came on the road to NEWVA #9 Middlebury who made the largest jump from week four to week five, up from #13. The Lord Jeffs beat Westfield St. and Hamilton, both in straight sets. Sandwiched between matches with Colby-Sawyer and UMass Boston is a marquee matchup next week with NEWVA #6 Bowdoin on Friday night.

4. Williams (13-5 overall, 7-1 in-region), 74 points

Right behind Amherst is Williams who score straight set wins over SUNY New Paltz and Hamilton before outlasting NEWVA #9 Middlebury on the road in five sets. The Ephs have a pair of home matches this week against UMass Boston and NEWVA #6 Bowdoin on Friday and Saturday.

5. Tufts (13-4 overall, 12-2 in-region), 67 points

Tufts went 2-0 against ranked NEWVA opponents this week, beating #13 Endicott in four sets and #14 Colby in straight sets. Wins over Bates and Brandeis helped the Jumbos to their modest five-match win streak. A weekend tilt with NESCAC challengers Wesleyan (Conn.) and Trinity (Conn.) lay ahead.
