Amherst Jumps to 4th as MIT Remains Atop NEWVA Poll #4

BEVERLY, Mass. - October 12, 2021 - For the third NEWVA coaches poll of the 2021 season, the Engineers of MIT have remained atop the poll, garnering 9 of 12 possible first place votes. Currently ranked No. 18 in the most recent AVCA DIII Coaches Poll, MIT is currently 17-1 overall, and 6-0 in NEWMAC play, having only lost to AVCA No. 3 Trinity (Tex.) on Saturday. Amherst, last week's No. 7 team in the NEWVA poll, makes the biggest jump in week three, moving up three spots to No. 4. 

The fourth NEWVA regional poll will be released on Tuesday, October 19.

Now up to 19th in the most recent AVCA DIII Coaches Poll, the Engineers split a pair of matches last week, sweeping regional foe JWU 3-0, before being swept by AVCA No. 3 Trinity (Tex.) for their first setback of 2021.

2. Middlebury (15-1, 5-1 NESCAC) | 158 points | 1 first place vote 

The Panthers went 1-1 for the week, dropping a hard fought 3-2 match to Wesleyan before rebounding to defeat Connecticut College 3-0.

3. Wesleyan (11-2, 5-2 NESCAC) | 152 points

The Cardinal went 2-1 on the week, knocking off NEWVA No. 7 Endicott 3-1, and NEWVA No. 2 Middlebury 3-2 before dropping a 3-1 decision to NEWVA No. 4 Amherst on Saturday.

4. Amherst (10-1, 5-1 NEWMAC) | 141 points | 1 first place vote

The Mammoths made the biggest jump from last week to this week in the NEWVA poll rankings, moving up from No. 7 after going 3-0 on the week with wins over Westfield St. (3-0), Connecticut College (3-1) and NEWVA No. 3 Wesleyan (3-1).

5. Williams (11-1, 5-1 NESCAC) | 123 points

The fourth NESCAC school in the top five of the NEWVA poll, the Ephs extended their win streak to three after knocking off Colby (3-0) and Bates (3-1) to close out the week.
