Lancers Drop Conference Battle to Owls

Lancers Drop Conference Battle to Owls

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Lancers (9-12, 3-0 MASCAC) faced off against conference foe Westfield State Owls (4-15, 3-1 MASCAC) for a second time this season. The Lancers walked away with a win in September in a non-conference game, the final being 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-16).

Tonight's game showcased the team's "Lancer Game" as student-athletes from other sports were in attendance to cheer and support their fellow Worcester State Athletics members.

FINAL:

Lancers 0

Westfield St. 3 (25-20, 25-20, 25-15)

The first set for the Lancers was a whirlwind. They went down big early, eventually crawling their way back into it as their first lead came at 13-12. The Owls were determined to not let this one slip away, regaining composure and winning the first game 25-20.

The second set was as competitive as it gets. Brissette Court was rocking throughout the intense battle as Worcester was down 22-18 and rallied the game back to 22-22. Unfortunately, the Lancers were not able to finish off the comeback as Westfield created a kill to seal the second set win.

Buzzing off of momentum from their previous two sets, Westfield rode their high and finished the Lancers off with a sweep. The Owls were able to kill off anything the Lancers could muster up and sailed smoothly to a revenge win in the battle for the top spot in the MASCAC.

Senior middle blocker Maeve Cadogan (Wilmington, Mass.) finished her night with eight points as junior setter Angela Colonis (Waterford, Mass.) had six points on the night with 12 assists and 10 digs.

Graduate student Camryn Burgio ended the night as leader in digs (23), adding to her number one ranking in the category.

With the loss, the Lancers drop to (9-13, 3-1 MASCAC) while Westfield St. improves to (5-15, 4-o MASCAC). This is not likely to be the last time these two meet this season as things currently stand, a third match may be in the cards in post season play.

The Lancers embark on a five game away stretch that begins at Rhode Island College Thursday, October 19th for a 7 p.m. start.
